How 2 Point Farm Transforms Alpaca Fiber Into High-Quality Products

From shearing to finished goods, discover the hands-on process behind every product we create. This behind-the-scenes look shows how Suri alpaca fiber is transformed with care and craftsmanship.

Alpaca fiber is a naturally renewable resource because it grows back every year. In most regions of the United States, alpacas must be shorn annually to maintain their health and comfort. Imagine wearing your heaviest winter coat in the heat and humidity of July—that’s what an alpaca would experience without yearly shearing.

Every alpaca’s fleece has a purpose, and that purpose depends on the fiber’s quality characteristics. We carefully evaluate micron, uniformity, and staple length to determine the best use for each part of the clip.

Our finest fiber becomes luxurious yarn and roving for knitting, crochet, weaving, and hand spinning. It’s also ideal for soft, next-to-skin items such as socks, gloves, and hats. Coarser or less uniform fiber is well-suited for practical items like dryer balls and rug yarn. The least desirable fiber, often from areas like the lower legs and belly, still holds value and is put to good use in bird-nesting kits and garden mulch.

We use several methods to transform our fiber into beautiful, functional finished products:

Fiber Mills – Local mills process our raw fleece into premium yarn and roving. Some of these yarns are hand-dyed here at 2 Point Farm, and we occasionally blend in silk for added color, strength, and softness.

Local Fiber Pools – We participate in regional fiber pools, including a recent Kentucky–Indiana–Ohio collaboration where fiber from 18 farms was combined and processed into high-quality socks. We’ve also joined a national Suri alpaca pool that produced beautiful Suri socks.

National Fiber Pools – We contribute fiber to national pools that collect fleece from farms across the United States and transform it into high-quality socks, gloves, hats, and other wearable products.

Handmade Creations – Some of our hats, gloves, and scarves are handmade right here at 2 Point Farm. We also offer a curated collection of luxury scarves crafted by a master weaver using yarn produced from our own Suri alpacas.

In addition to our farm-made and farm-sourced items, we also carry a select range of products from reputable U.S. wholesalers who share our commitment to quality and fair-trade principles. This allows us to offer a consistent, trustworthy selection of alpaca goods while supporting ethical production practices.
